innerwell ketamine treatment review

Innerwell is a telehealth platform offering ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP). With flexible pricing options and personalized treatment plans, it provides greater affordability and more one-on-one care than many of its competitors.

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy has risen to prominence in the past several years for its unique ability to increase neuroplasticity, providing a decrease in depression and anxiety symptoms in some individuals. KAP is legal and may work in individuals with symptoms of anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions who haven’t achieved relief from therapy or medications alone. However, KAP involves certain safety risks, including the risk of misuse, increased blood pressure, psychiatric events, and slowed breathing.

In this article, we’ll review Innerwell’s ketamine therapy program, including our experience using it, how it works, who it’s best for, and how it compares to other online KAP providers.

Our Quick Take

Innerwell offers online ketamine therapy from licensed psychiatrists and therapists specializing in KAP. The platform’s app serves as a mental healthcare hub, providing ongoing support from your care team and complementary tools, like mood tracking. With flexible plans and pricing options, Innerwell is a more affordable KAP provider for individuals experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression, as well as other mental health conditions or concerns .

Innerwell At-Home Ketamine Treatment Pros & Cons

  • Personalized dosages using a proprietary dosing algorithm
  • More affordable pricing, as low as $88 per ketamine treatment

  • Only accepts select insurance plans

Our Experience With Innerwell Ketamine Treatment

Overall, I found Innerwell to be an expansive telehealth platform for common mental health concerns. As a digital hub for mental health, Innerwell offers KAP, psychiatry services, and talk therapy within a single platform for greater ease, convenience, and continuity of care.

For ketamine therapy, Innerwell offers 3 plans: weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. I love that Innerwell provides this range of options for greater personalization in mental health services. Plus, each ketamine treatment costs between $88 to $200, depending on which plan you choose, making it one of the most affordable options available for virtual KAP.

Innerwell offers ketamine tablets, which are taken orally. This is a lower-cost alternative to ketamine infusions, which must be administered by a clinician in an office setting.

Additionally, like many KAP programs, Innerwell requires a trip sitter. You can opt for psychotherapist-led ketamine sessions for an extra fee, all within the Innerwell platform.

Benefits of Innerwell At-Home Ketamine Therapy

Innerwell at-home ketamine therapy is led by psychiatric clinicians and licensed therapists. The platform allows you to select a care team that works for you, and they’ll devise a personalized care plan (with customized dosages) for your needs. Note that all of Innerwell’s licensed therapists are Master’s or Doctorate-level and certified in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy.

Ketamine therapy may work for individuals with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and certain eating disorders, in some cases. It may be used as an adjunct to medications or talk therapy, or for some cases of treatment-resistant depression, a life-threatening condition.

Innerwell aims to provide the rigor of an in-office KAP program from home. So, it combines care from a therapist and psychiatrist with in-app mood tracking, virtual check-ins, and community support.

Innerwell Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

Innerwell offers oral rapid dissolve ketamine tablets, which are taken right before your KAP session. This form of ketamine takes effect within 20 minutes to an hour. Ketamine’s half-life is around 4 to 5 hours, so it will completely leave your body within approximately 10 hours.

All forms of ketamine, including tablets, pose a risk of reliance and your symptoms may return after you stop taking the medication. Innerwell’s physicians are certified in KAP and keep the risk of reliance in mind while prescribing ketamine.

Along with your prescribed medication, Innerwell’s KAP program comes with an eye mask and blood pressure cuff to use during your sessions.

Innerwell Ketamine Dosage

Innerwell uses a proprietary dosing algorithm to determine the best dose and frequency of ketamine for your needs (between 100 and 800mg per tablet). It considers the individual’s current condition, symptoms, and responsiveness to ketamine. The first two doses determine your sensitivity to ketamine, which is used to hone your dosage for future sessions.

In each virtual check-up, your psychiatric clinician will adjust your dose to fit your ongoing needs.

Innerwell Psychedelic Integration

Innerwell offers online psychedelic integration sessions to enhance the benefits of ketamine therapy. In these sessions, you’ll reflect upon your experience with a licensed psychotherapist and integrate those findings into your day-to-day. You can choose between 30-minute ($100) or 50-minute ($165) integration sessions.

Additionally, Innerwell offers preparation sessions with licensed therapists. The goal of these sessions is to put you in the best possible mindset for ketamine therapy and ensure you’re open to the process. Like Innerwell’s integration sessions, preparatory sessions last for 30 or 50 minutes and cost $100 to $165.

Innerwell’s psychedelic integration services include psychotherapist-led ketamine therapy sessions. With this option, your therapist will be with you throughout the session for guidance and support. These sessions last for 120 minutes and cost $375.

To best serve your needs, Innerwell’s team of psychotherapists includes specialists in a range of modalities, including:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Emotion-focused therapy (EFT)
  • Exposure therapy
  • Psychodynamic therapy

Innerwell App

The Innerwell app is designed to be a mental healthcare hub, providing access to your psychiatrist, therapist, and health-tracking tools from one place. You can access the following features within the app:

  • Mood tracking to accurately monitor your progress
  • Reflections for KAP integration
  • 24/7 virtual access to your care team for dosage adjustments, scheduling, etc.
  • Audio features for relaxation

How Does Innerwell At-Home Ketamine Therapy Work?

To get started with Innerwell’s at-home ketamine therapy program, you’ll need to complete the following steps:

  1. Complete the 2-minute online questionnaire to determine if you’re a candidate for KAP. The form gathers information about your medical history and goals for the program.
  2. Choose a plan that fits your needs.
  3. Complete a virtual consultation with your psychiatric clinician to create your personalized treatment plan. This initial appointment can be scheduled within a week of taking the questionnaire.
  4. Once you’ve officially been accepted into the program, your first two doses of ketamine will be shipped. The delivery time is typically 3 to 5 days.

Innerwell Ketamine Cost

Innerwell offers lower-cost ketamine treatment from home. New users can choose between an 8-Dose Foundation Plan at $77 weekly or a 24-Dose Extended Plan at $154 weekly. Both of these plans are billed monthly for 3 months.

Returning users can choose between the following plans:

  • Weekly Plan: $700 for 8 doses ($88 per treatment)
  • Bi-Weekly Plan: $550 for 4 doses ($138 per treatment)
  • Monthly Plan: $400 for 2 doses ($200 per treatment)

Why We Recommend Innerwell At-Home Ketamine Treatment

We recommend Innerwell for at-home ketamine treatment because of its focus on personalization and one-on-one care. Individuals receive ongoing support from a collaborative care team, including a licensed therapist and psychiatrist, ensuring continuity of care throughout your KAP experience.

Other key reasons why we recommend Innerwell for at-home ketamine therapy include:

1. Personalized Dosage Plans

Innerwell offers a high degree of personalization for ketamine dosages and frequency. The platform uses a proprietary dosing algorithm to prescribe tablets between 100 to 800 mg, and you can choose a treatment plan to suit your desired frequency (monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly). This makes Innerwell a fitting choice for some individuals experiencing symptoms of certain mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression

2. Licensed Therapists Certified in Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

Innerwell’s licensed therapists are all certified in ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, with a Master’s or Doctorate-level education. Having undergone specific training in KAP, these therapists can provide specialized guidance and ensure your safety throughout your treatment.

3. Personal Care Team

One of the key features of Innerwell’s ketamine therapy program is a personal care team, including both a therapist and a psychiatrist. This ensures that your providers are aligned on your treatment plan and can work together to meet your needs. Plus, you can conveniently access both of your providers in the Innerwell app.

4. Flexible Payment Options

Innerwell is a more affordable ketamine program, offering multiple plans and payment options. With the weekly plan, each ketamine treatment is just $88, making it a lower-cost option for individuals who benefit from ongoing KAP. However, Innerwell also offers a monthly plan at $200 per dose and a bi-weekly plan at $138 per dose. Compared to other online KAP providers, this pricing is highly competitive.

Ketamine Treatment Side Effects and Safety

Ketamine side effects are generally linked to dosage: the higher the dose, the higher the risk of side effects. Your Innerwell provider can adjust your dose to help prevent or lessen these effects.

Possible side effects of ketamine may include:

  • Confusion
  • Disorientation
  • Reduced motor coordination
  • Increased breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, or body temperature
  • Visual or auditory hallucinations
  • The sensation of being detached from yourself or your surroundings

Ketamine Safety

Generally, individuals with a history of the following conditions aren’t considered candidates for ketamine therapy due to the risk of adverse effects:

  • Schizophrenia or symptoms of psychosis
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Untreated hyperthyroidism
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Substance use disorder
  • Symptoms of dementia

Additionally, people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or may be pregnant should avoid ketamine therapy.

When to Seek Emergency Medical Care

Seek emergency care while using ketamine-assisted psychotherapy if any of the side effects listed above become severe or you experience signs of ketamine overdose, including:

- Nausea or vomiting
- Chest pain
- Abnormal heart rate
- Severe confusion
- Paralysis
- Seizures
- Elevated blood pressure
- Extreme sedation
- Loss of consciousness

Cheapest At-Home Ketamine Treatment

Joyous is the cheapest at-home ketamine treatment at $129 per month for a 30-day supply of low-dose medication. However, Innerwell is the least expensive option for full-dose KAP sessions, with each treatment costing between $88 and $200.

Innerwell vs. Mindbloom

Mindbloom is a popular KAP platform. Similar to Innerwell, it provides 10 to 800mg ketamine tablets. However, while Innerwell offers the choice of 2, 4, or 8 sessions within 2 months, Mindbloom offers just one track: 6 weekly treatments for 4 to 6 weeks. Additionally, Mindbloom doesn’t offer 24/7 care team access with support from a therapist and psychiatrist, like Innerwell. However, Mindbloom is currently available in more states than Innerwell.

Innerwell vs. Nue Life

In total, Nue Life costs $1,399 for 6 at-home ketamine treatments. This makes it significantly more expensive than Innerwell, which offers multiple pricing options (the most expensive of which costs $700 for 8 doses). However, Nue Life offers the option of group or individual integration sessions, while Innerwell offers only individual integration sessions.

Innerwell vs. Joyous

Joyous offers daily low-dose ketamine therapy, while Innerwell offers full-dose ketamine therapy. This may be a good option for individuals who are interested in the benefits of ketamine for certain mental health conditions or concerns, but want to avoid the psychedelic effects of full-dose ketamine therapy. Additionally, Joyous doesn’t require trip sitters. However, Joyous lacks integration sessions and in-app features, which are key benefits of Innerwell’s program.

The Verdict: Is Innerwell's Ketamine Therapy Worth It?

Innerwell is an ideal option for individuals seeking one-on-one psychedelic therapy for anxiety, depression, and/or other mental health concerns. With an entirely online platform, it’s a convenient option for people who may not be able to attend in-office sessions.

With one-on-one care from both a psychiatrist and licensed therapist specializing in KAP, Innerwell provides comprehensive care for certain mental health conditions. The platform’s app is a hub for your KAP experience, offering ongoing access to your providers, mood tracking, and audio tools. It also provides online preparation and integration sessions to maximize the benefits of ketamine therapy.

Innerwell offers flexible plan options to meet many individuals’ needs, making it more versatile and affordable than many of its competitors. While Innerwell doesn’t offer low-dose ketamine therapy, its personalized treatment plans can suit many cases.

Does the Innerwell ketamine program accept insurance?

The Innerwell ketamine program accepts insurance from select providers in California and New York. The program is also FSA/HSA eligible.

Can I take other medications while on the ketamine program?

Ketamine is generally safe to take with other medications, including SSRIs, but there are a few exceptions. Talk to your doctor about all of the prescription and non-prescription medications you’re taking before starting KAP.

Does ketamine therapy get you high?

Ketamine treatments may involve relatively low dosages, which generally don’t produce a “high.” However, higher dosages may lead to a “high” feeling. Dosage will depend on many factors, including personal preference, diagnosis, other health conditions, and more.

How many ketamine treatments does it take to treat depression?

The right number of ketamine treatments to treat depression will vary depending on the individual. Innerwell’s programs include 2, 4, or 8 doses over 2 months.

What are some reasons why someone may opt for ketamine therapy?

Someone may opt for ketamine therapy if conventional therapies (i.e. prescription medications and talk therapy) fail to improve symptoms of anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions to a sufficient extent. It may also be used for treatment-resistant depression.

How does ketamine therapy work for anxiety?

Ketamine therapy works for anxiety by improving neuroplasticity, meaning it helps the brain’s neural networks adapt to experiences. This may lead to an improved mood, a healthier outlook on life, and a general improvement in anxiety symptoms.

We conducted extensive research to evaluate the pricing, effectiveness, accessibility, safety, overall quality, patient support, and useability of Innerwell, which also included examining other ketamine therapy telehealth platforms. To determine overall value, we evaluated the quality of care, plan options, pricing, and treatment features.

Other factors we investigated prior to choosing the best online ketamine therapy program included convenience, discounts, patient support, access to healthcare providers, health insurance, plan options, and any free services offered. For the best platform overall, Innerwell stood out for its wide range of plans, affordability, in-app features, and ongoing care.
