adhd online treatment overview

If symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have decreased the quality of your life, you may want to consider an online treatment provider. That way, you can access medication, therapy, and/or coaching all from one online treatment provider, without having to schedule and attend multiple in-person appointments.

We like ADHD Online due to the comprehensiveness of their care, which includes assessments, medication management, therapy, and mental wellness coaching for ADHD and co-occurring conditions, including anxiety, depression, and more. While other providers may be more affordable, we like that ADHD Online offers a holistic treatment platform, streamlining care for individuals experiencing symptoms of ADHD, as well as other mental health conditions or concerns.

In this ADHD Online review, we’ll discuss its benefits, what medications it offers, potential medication side effects, our experience using this platform, and more. We also spoke with Tina Haroutunian, a pharmacist, about her take on virtual ADHD treatment providers.

Our Quick Take

For people experiencing symptoms of ADHD and possibly other mental health conditions or concerns, ADHD Online may be a great choice. Their comprehensive care is more expensive than some competitors, but it offers assessment services, mental wellness coaching, medication management, therapy, as well as other resources, all from one convenient online treatment platform. Keep in mind that while mental wellness coaching services are available nationwide, therapy services are only available in certain states.

ADHD Online Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Comprehensive care for ADHD and co-occurring conditions
  • Combines medication management with therapy and coaching
  • May be able to use HSA/FSA to cover services

Cons

  • Not the most affordable choice for online ADHD treatment
  • Slightly longer wait times for appointments (seven days or less)

My Experience With ADHD Online Treatment

I found ADHD Online to be a convenient way to access medications for ADHD, anxiety, depression, and more. Their Smart Assessment–a list of questions you’ll need to answer about yourself to get started–is very thorough, so much so that it takes over an hour to get through. But all that prep work pays off when you meet your provider, who has a solid understanding of how to support you and what resources and/or services to recommend moving forward.

Keep in mind that many people are still finding it challenging to fill their stimulant medication prescriptions due to the shortages of these drugs. With that said, I really like that ADHD Online not only is able to prescribe a wide selection of ADHD medications (stimulants and non-stimulants), but also provides resources to help individuals advocate for themselves at pharmacies. Plus, their comprehensive care program includes other services, including talk therapy and mental wellness coaching, making it a well-rounded and supportive provider.

Benefits of ADHD Online

At ADHD Online, your treatment plan is carefully crafted to meet your individual needs and circumstances. As we’ve mentioned, treatment may consist of medication management, talk therapy, and mental wellness coaching not only for ADHD, but also for certain co-occurring conditions, like anxiety and depression.

ADHD Online Medications

While the availability of specific drugs can vary from state to state, ADHD Online prescribes the following types of medications to those who qualify:

A Word From Our Expert

— Tina Haroutunian, Pharm.D.

"I think virtual prescribing of controlled substances definitely has its pros and cons with the strongest pro being easier patient accessibility. Adderall and Vyvanse are both schedule II narcotics that typically require a new prescription each month, which can be very time consuming for long-term patients to maintain. Allowing these patients to virtually obtain their prescriptions will cut down unnecessary office visits solely for the purpose of obtaining the current month’s prescription when therapy has remained the same.

The biggest con for me as a pharmacist would be legitimacy of the patient/prescriber relationship when done solely virtually. I have seen some online pharmacies just require a simple survey to be filled out before a prescription can be provided electronically which doesn’t ensure that the proper treatment is being provided to the patient."

  • Antidepressants boost the levels of chemicals like dopamine and norepinephrine in your brain, which may help manage certain ADHD-related symptoms, such as regulating attention span. While not typically first-line treatment, they may be a good option for individuals also experiencing symptoms related to anxiety and/or depression. Examples include bupropion (Wellbutrin) and venlafaxine (Effexor XR).
  • Non-stimulant medications that are FDA-approved to treat ADHD typically work by targeting brain receptors, similar to antidepressants, and/or by increasing norepinephrine in the brain. Examples include atomoxetine (Straterra) and guanfacine (Intuniv).
  • Blood pressure medications sometimes share the same active ingredients as some non-stimulant ADHD medications, making them effective for certain individuals. Examples include clonidine (Catapres) and guanfacine (Tenex).

Does ADHD Online prescribe Adderall?

Yes, if medically appropriate and legal in your state, ADHD Online providers can prescribe Adderall. Just keep in mind that you still may face shortages when you try to fill your prescription.

What Else Does ADHD Online Offer?

In addition to medication management (if appropriate), ADHD Online also offers:

  • Therapy, which costs $99 per 50-minute session with a licensed clinician
  • Online mental wellness coaching, which costs $99 per session and is available in every state to help with practical skills like organization, sleep hygiene, goal setting, and more

Keep in mind that while mental wellness coaching is available nationwide, therapy is only available in certain states.

How Does ADHD Online Work?

When you’re ready to sign up for ADHD Online, you’ll start with their Smart Assessment, a thorough list of questions about your medical history and current symptoms. It can take 60-90 minutes to fill out, so be sure to set aside some time.

Within a week, a clinician reviews your assessment and meets with you to develop your personalized treatment plan. You’ll check in with them 30 days later to make sure everything’s going well (and if not, you can always make an adjustment).

ADHD Medication Safety

It might not be safe to take certain ADHD medications if you have diabetes, glaucoma, heart disease, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), Tourette’s syndrome, or liver issues. If you have or have had any of these conditions, be sure to mention that to your clinician before trying any new medications.

You should also discuss any mental health conditions you’ve experienced or if you are, or are planning on becoming pregnant or breastfeeding.

Prescription stimulants, in particular, also can come with serious risks, including misuse, overdose, and death. Prescription stimulants, as well as other prescription medications, should never be shared with anyone and should also be stored where children cannot access them.

Reach out to your doctor or emergency services immediately if you experience any of these potentially serious symptoms:

  • Blue fingers or toes

  • Chest pain
  • Depression
  • Erections that last for several hours and/or painful erections
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Fever

    ADHD Online vs. Done

If you already have a therapist and are strictly looking for medication management, Done might be the right choice for you. They don’t offer the comprehensive care that ADHD Online does, but they can match you with a provider faster (as soon as the next day) and their follow-ups are less expensive ($79 per month).

    ADHD Online vs. Klarity

Klarity is a good option to consider if you are looking for a more affordable option. Since you’ll be covering the costs yourself, you’ll be happy to know that they’re fairly reasonable at $149 for your first visit and $59 for follow-ups. Plus, Klarity offers therapy in addition to medication management, as well as same-day appointments. However, unlike ADHD Online, they don’t offer mental wellness coaching services.

The Verdict: Is ADHD Online Legit?

For adults looking for a comprehensive provider to anchor their care plan, ADHD Online is worth a look. Thanks to their all-inclusive treatment, you can rely on them for medication management, support through the difficulties of everyday life, and resources for problem-solving, goal setting, organization, and more. On the other hand, you might prefer one of their competitors if you’re only interested in medication management or prefer to use insurance.

    FAQs

What is the best online ADHD assessment?

While we can’t say for sure that it’s the best, we’re happy to report that ADHD Online has one of the most thorough online assessments we’ve seen for ADHD.

    Are online ADHD tests accurate?

It is possible for a doctor to diagnose (and treat) ADHD safely without ever meeting you in person, but they’ll need a lot of information about you to do so. Don’t trust the results of any test that isn’t verified by a licensed medical professional.

What states does ADHD Online cover?

ADHD Online offers diagnosis in every US state. You can get talk therapy from ADHD Online if you live in Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, or Washington.

How much does it cost to get diagnosed with ADHD?

That depends on where you go to get diagnosed. With ADHD Online, you can expect diagnosis to cost you $179.

What is commonly mistaken as ADHD?

There are many conditions that share symptoms with ADHD, such as anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. This can make them difficult to tell apart. If you are experiencing symptoms that are decreasing your quality of life, be sure to reach out to a qualified clinician for support.

    Methodology

We conducted extensive research to evaluate the pricing, effectiveness, accessibility, overall quality, and customer support of ADHD Online, as well as some of their competitors. To determine overall value, we evaluated cost, usability, treatment options, and subscription services. Other factors we investigated prior to choosing the best online ADHD service included convenience, discounts, customer service, and access to healthcare providers. For the most comprehensive care model, ADHD Online stood out for its wide selection of medication, and inclusion of talk therapy and coaching for adults with symptoms of ADHD.
